Mary Slessor’s mission wasn’t just about sprea Mary Slessor’s mission wasn’t just about spreading faith—it was about standing against the darkness that enslaved women and children. When she arrived in Nigeria, she encountered brutal traditions that left twin babies to die, believing they were cursed. Women faced forced marriages, held captive by fear and violence. Mary saw the evil done to these women and took action. She rescued those twins, fought for women’s rights, and provided refuge for the oppressed, bringing light into the darkest places. Her work resonates with what I’m doing with Zonta International. While we may not face the same customs, women and girls today still encounter violence, discrimination, and inequality. Zonta’s mission to empower women and girls continues Mary’s legacy through advocacy, education, and hands-on work. We stand against modern oppression by promoting laws that protect women and creating pathways for young girls to rise. First and foremost, I am a writer. In second gra First and foremost, I am a writer. In second grade, I wrote & illustrated a story about how the Easter bunny got sick and a new bunny had to take over the tough job of hiding all the eggs. I continued writing as I got older. I wrote many beginnings of novels, many poems and many short stories. I worked at our local newspaper as typesetter and even got a few articles published. I dreamed of bestselling novels and jobs in New York City. So, when I was accepted to @universityoftexasataustin in the College of Communications Journalism Department, I knew all my dreams were going to come true…until they didn’t. Between an extreme eating disorder and growing needle-based drug addiction, that dream was slowly fading into the background. My choices were writing a different story. But one sunny spring day, God flipped the script. After popping a hit of X, I went for a long drive. Dressed and veiled like the Bride of Satan, I didn’t know I was going to attend my own funeral. But it wasn’t a normal funeral. It was the death of the things that held me back from living out THE STORY God had written for me before time began. The little bit that was left of that little second-grade girl dreaming of Easter bunnies conquering hard things, pushed me through the doors of a church. I was writing a book about the end of the world. I needed a Bible to “do research.” Not wanting to spend my own money, I demanded one from two old ladies that stood in total shock at the black veiled monstrosity before them. While they went to the back to retrieve a Bible, I had a longing to get into the chapel. I never intended to go in…but something deep inside compelled me. That’s when my story reached its climactic end…which would also be a beginning. The wooden crucifix of Jesus hung, beckoning me. So beautiful. So awful. My sins and salvation both stood before me. It broke me and rebuilt me all at the same time. I was forever changed. And everything single thing I am today stems from that singular moment. Now, I tell a new story…but not one of Easter bunnies…but MY STORY. I tell it because somewhere someone is sitting behind a screen in the dark who needs to hear it.
